Renting With Pets:
Housing Resources

Pet Housing
Finding and keeping housing with pets can be challenging — and sometimes overwhelming. If you’re struggling to navigate pet policies, breed restrictions, or rental requirements, we want you to know one thing first:
You are not alone.
Pets are family. They offer comfort, stability, and emotional connection — especially during tough times. Our mission is to help keep families together by offering tools, resources, and guidance to support renters with pets.
Pets are family. Housing policies should support that.
Emotional Support Animal Housing Accommodations
Some people qualify for their pet to be recognized as an Emotional Support Animal under federal housing law. This allows your pet to stay with you even in housing that typically has pet restrictions.
What an ESA Is
An ESA provides comfort and emotional support to help with symptoms of a mental or emotional disability.
What an ESA Is Not
- It is not the same as a service animal.
- It should be used if there is a true emotional or mental health need.
How to Obtain an ESA Letter in California
California requires an ongoing relationship (usually around 30 days) with a licensed mental health professional before issuing an ESA letter. Here are some reputable providers who offer support and guidance:
Talking to Your Landlord
We know these conversations can feel intimidating. Below are templates you can use to respectfully and confidently communicate with landlords about your pet.
Requesting to Keep an Existing Pet
Requesting Permission to Adopt a Pet
Requesting an ESA Accommodation
Pet Resume Template
A Pet Resume can make a meaningful difference in rental applications — especially with private landlords.
Your pet resume can include:
- Your pet’s photo
- Age, weight, and breed (if helpful)
- Training details
- Vet and vaccination records
- Proof of spay/neuter
- References from past landlords or neighbors
- A short description of “a day in the life” of your pet
Where to Look for Pet-Friendly Rentals
- Zillow (use the pet-friendly filter)
- Apartments.com
- “People + Pet” Verified Housing
- MyPitbullIsFamily.org (helps with breed restrictions)
- Local Facebook/Nextdoor community groups
Negotiating Pet Deposits + Fees
Many landlords are willing to work with tenants who:
- Offer an increased refundable deposit instead of monthly fees
- Share prior rental references
- Provide proof of training or good behavior
